I went with a 650 edelbrock, with an air gap intake. You can check for a vacuum leak by getting a can of carb cleaner and spraying down the intake area and listen for an rpm change. My personal opinion, the TBI system just needs to pump more fuel/air into a performance 454. The quadrajet and HEI are the least expensive, provided good used parts are available.

I think you may have a few tricks running the th350 starter and the modern flex plate.
